Musing (“the app,” “we,” “us”) is a note-taking app for iPhone and Mac. This policy explains what information the app handles and why. The short version: your notes live on your device, the intelligence runs on your device by default, and we never see, sell, or train on your data — we don’t collect it at all.

Notes stay on your device

The notes you create — your text, transcripts, photos, and the context captured with them — are stored locally on your device. If you enable iCloud, Apple syncs that data across your own devices under your Apple account, in your private iCloud database; we never receive a copy and cannot read it.

Intelligence runs on your device

As of Musing 4.0, every intelligent feature — search, “ask your notes,” reading text in photos, understanding what a note is, and hidden tagging — runs entirely on your iPhone or Mac, using Apple Intelligence and Apple’s on-device frameworks. No note text, photo, or query is ever sent to our servers or to any third party by default. These features work in airplane mode.

Pro Mode (bring your own AI service)

Pro Mode is off by default. If you turn it on and paste your own Perplexity, Anthropic, or OpenAI API key, you can ask Musing to look something up on the web — from a note, from Ask, or by ticking the per-capture box while writing. You choose the provider and keep usage and costs under your control. Only then is that note’s text and any photos on it sent to the provider you chose, on your own key. When sources are returned, Musing shows them as tappable citations beside the web findings. Capture enrichment, tags, structure, photo reading, and answers still run on your device. Keys stay in the device Keychain; we never see them. Pro Mode is not a paid upgrade inside Musing.

Saving links from other apps

When you save a link to Musing — for example, by sharing a webpage from Safari — the app fetches a preview of that page, its title and a thumbnail image, directly from the website. This lets your saved note show what the link is instead of a bare address. The request goes to the website you’re saving (not to us), and the preview is stored with your note on your device.

Location & weather

If you allow location access, Musing uses your location on-device to tag where a note was made, and to fetch local weather via Apple WeatherKit (a request handled by Apple, not us). Sensitive places — clinics, hospitals, places of worship — are never named. You can turn any context signal off at any time in Settings.

Voice

Voice notes are transcribed on your device using Apple’s on-device speech recognition. The recorded audio is stored on your device with the note.

What we don’t do

• We do not collect, store, or have access to your notes or personal data.
• We do not track you across apps or websites, and we show no ads.
• We do not sell or share your personal data.
• We never use your data to train any AI model.

Price

Musing is free — no ads, no account, no subscription, no credits, and no paid feature packs. Every feature included with the app is available to everyone.

Earlier versions

Versions of Musing before 4.0 processed AI requests (search, ask, note enhancement) by sending the relevant note text and photos, over an encrypted connection, to Anthropic’s Claude API, which does not train on data submitted through the API. If you are still on an earlier version, that behavior applies until you update. Version 4.0 and later send nothing by default; optional Pro Mode web search (above) is the only exception, and only on your explicit action.

Keeping & deleting your data

Because notes are stored on your device, you control them: delete a note in the app, clear all notes in Settings, or remove the app to delete its data from that device (iCloud-synced copies are removed per Apple’s sync).

Children

Musing is not directed to children under 13 and does not knowingly collect information from them.

Changes

We may update this policy as the app evolves. Material changes will be reflected here with a new “last updated” date.
